Big Band (UQBB)
The University of Queensland Big Band is a unique and dynamic ensemble comprising students and alumni from an array of academic fields, established at UQ St Lucia in 2007.
Under the direction of Churchill Fellow and highly-respected trumpeter Clint Allen, the band performs at festivals, corporate functions, community events and concerts throughout Brisbane and internationally.
Since its founding, the band has played at many notable venues and events such as the Brisbane Jazz Club, the Teneriffe, Bellingen and Broadbeach Festivals, the Princess and Globe Theatres and various corporate gigs. The strength of the group lies in its energy and commitment to continually pushing the envelope of what a contemporary big band is. Under the perpetually inspiring direction of Clint Allen, the ensemble has worked hard at honing traditional jazz standards and contemporary Australian and international premieres alike.
In April 2016, the UQ Big Band toured the United States, performing at Carnegie Hall and Disneyland (LA), while also working with internationally renowned artists such as Gordon Goodwin, Randy Brecker and Vince Gardner of the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra. The band maintained its momentum throughout the year to deliver a crowd-wowing event at the New Globe Theatre in November, which featured Australian premieres by Horst Michael Schaffer (director of the Austria-based Jazz Big Band Graz), and a world premier by Brisbane composer and academic, Dr Chris Perren. Throughout 2017 the band will be celebrating its 10th anniversary by continuing to explore contemporary jazz compositions and driving to create eclectic and innovative performances.
The ensemble rehearses each Wednesday evening during semester on campus in St Lucia. The band welcomes expressions of interest from the community regarding function/performance enquiries.
