What’s great about Underground is that there are so many opportunities to get involved and create theatre.
We put on main-house plays in the Schonell Theatre every year, as well as participate in and host a number of theatre festivals throughout the year. From actors to musicians to stage managers to costume designers, Underground welcomes theatrical talents of all shapes and sizes.
Underground shows are rarely a ‘typical night out at the theatre’. Our artistic identity is founded in the unique. Our ultimate goal is to create a theatrical experience that you will not have seen or been involved with before. In short, theatre that genuinely stays with you.
However, Underground is also a very social experience. Life-long friendships are formed in this society, and if you get involved you will definitely understand why! Go Underground with us!
The Ugly One by Marius von Mayenburg
Our first main-stage production of 2017 is The Ugly One by Marius von Mayenburg. Ever been told you're ugly? Or even just wanted to be straight up beautiful?
Between his boss, wife and colleague, undergoing surgery to become beautiful seems to be the answer to all Lette's problems. But he discovers that when the bandages come off, the real problems have only just begun. Don't miss the electric dark comedy-drama that is The Ugly One. The Ugly One opens on March 2nd.
Stop Kiss by Diana Son
Our second main-stage production of 2017 is Stop Kiss by Diana Son. Following the burgeoning relationship between two people, Stop Kiss is a suspenseful and heartbreaking story that goes back and forth in time, climaxing in an awful hate crime that takes place late one night in NY. Stop Kiss opens on May 17th, with tickets starting at as little as $10.
Anywhere Theatre Festival - “Midsummer"
Once again Underground is participating in the fantastic Anywhere Theatre Festival with a submission helmed by our Festivals and Development Officers, Kate and Josh. Midsummer is an immersive piece of devised theatre set on the brink of the apocalypse. 5 strangers find themselves taking refuge in a bar, and from there the story unfolds. In this unique theatrical experience, the audience watches the performers inside an actual bar, Padre at Woolloongabba, drinking and laughing as the end of the world approaches.
Underground’s flagship house festival, Playground is been an opportunity for Undergrounders to bring their own theatrical creations to life. The theme of this year’s Playground is “transitions”, and all kinds of art including theatre, song, puppetry, installations, painting are welcome. Directors, technical roles and actors, are also required, so keep you eyes peeled, and don’t forget to like the Facebook page for announcements!
SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN: email firstname.lastname@example.org
For the second year in a row, Underground is hugely thrilled to be collaborating with the Classics and Ancient History Society to bring an ancient piece of theatre to life. Following 2016's tragedy Oedipus Rex, this year our two societies will join to present the comedy Lysistrata, performed in UQ Natural Amphitheatre.
