UQU Environment Collective
WELCOME TO THE UQU ENVIRONMENT COLLECTIVE!
The UQU Environment Collective brought to you by UQU, your student union, is open to all students, staff and the public. We provide a platform for sharing ideas, and running campaigns for a greener and more sustainable UQ. The UQU Environment Collective is dedicated to:
- Encouraging the use of environmental and sustainable practices and policies by students and the University.
- Encouraging debate and discussion on environmental issues in a wider sense.
- Organising and participating in events and campaigns on environmental issues of concern to students.
BIG THINGS PLANNED FOR 2017
Over the past few years the UQU Environment Collective has been gaining momentum, so in 2017 you can look forward to:
Earth Hour Unplugged: A chilled out evening soirée with music, food and good vibes!
Movie nights: Each semester we showcase a documentary with an appropriate theme to kick off our semester. This makes for a great opportunity to get to know more like-minded people.
Suitcase Rummage: Find a pre-loved outfit or recycle your old clothing at these little flea markets.
World Environment Day Breakfast: Food security and sustainability is promoted and encouraged at this event, with talks from scientists and entrepreneurs to help us make better food choices, plus there’s a delicious free breakfast from Food-Connect.
Ride to Uni Day: During Sustainability Week, we bring out the smoothie-making bike and hand out free smoothies for anyone who chose the environmentally-friendly way to get to uni! There’s also an Instagram competition for the best bike photo.
EcoSpeak: For all you slam poets and amazing speakers out there, this is the night to spread your passions, concerns or ideas on the sustainability of practices on our Earth. The food is always locally grown and amazing and the event is open to students, staff and any member of the community.
New events coming in 2017
Clean Up Australia Day: To kick-start semester one, we’ll be gathering to clean up some local waterways then stop for a lovely afternoon picnic.
How-to-greenie Workshops: Ever wondered how to make your own toothpaste or laundry powder? Or what is better, buying local or organic? Always wanted to start a veggie patch for your balcony? Well this is the workshop for you! We hope to teach students with the guidance of some professionals on how to live more sustainably on a student’s budget.
Earth Sounds: Most likely to be the biggest UQU Environment Collective event of the year attracting all walks of life to enjoy beautiful music, great food and celebrate the end of semester with an exciting and enviro-friendly event.
Meetings, picnics, campaigning and crafternoons – We always have something on, so get in touch if you have questions and want to get involved!
Food Co-op: This little stall will be expanding in 2017, making it more of a pop-up café and grocer, with all your fresh, local and organic produce supplied by Food Connect and the UQ Campus Community Gardens. This is a membership-based co-op and will also supply good tunes, some comfy bean bags and home-made goods. We hope to see you there!
Fossil Free UQ: Our continued support for the Fossil Free UQ campaign includes promoting meet-ups and campaigning for the divestment of university funds from fossil fuel and big-polluter companies.
SUPPORT FOR LIKE-MINDED ON-CAMPUS GROUPS
If this sounds like something you’re interested in, we also encourage you to check out and support our friends at Climate for Change, Fossil Free UQ, Landcare, the UQ Campus Community Garden, UQ Sustainability Office, UQ Veg Society, GEMS, SPEAR and a whole heap more!
ENVIRONMENT COLLECTIVE AND UQ UNION (UQU)
This year the UQU Environment Collective is represented in UQU by Environment Officers Melissa Staines and Liam Butler. We work alongside a passionate group of students and staff – we’d love you to be a part of this movement!
