If you’re like me and have to sort your Airbnb choices from price low to high, or calculate how many people you can squeeze onto one bed to compensate extra bedroom fees … I feel ya #studentlife

This is where our trusty partners YHA Australia come to save the day. YHA Australia is a youth hostel association running over 80 hostels Australia wide, making it Australia’s largest provider of backpacker accommodation. As a membership-based, non-for-profit organisation, all profits are reinvested back into their hostel network and the facilities each provide.

Brandon and I were hosted by YHA Surfers Paradise for 2 nights. YHA Surfers is situated in Mariners Cove, the #1 location for all fun and adventurous water activities on the Gold Coast (think jet boating, jet skiing, scuba diving, cruises, helicopter rides etc). Just across the street lies Southport beach, providing a perfect location for a glorious morning stroll or to hit up the local RSL for a cheeky bite and drink. And within a 1km distance, the Main Beach town square is abundant with restaurants, cafes, clothing shops, 7/11 and much more! Popular close-by attractions only a 20min drive away include Surfers Paradise, Pacific Fair shopping centre, Dracula’s Cabaret Comedy show, Harbour Town Gold Coast, Dreamworld and Whitewater World. Stay tuned to my blogs to hear more about a few of these places … !!

Available rooms include sharing rooms (4 or 6 bedroom, either single or mixed gender) or private rooms (double room, twin rooms or 4-bed family rooms with ensuite) that come with linen, shared facilities, available courtesy bus, free parking and individual lockers (shared rooms). Shared facilities include split gender bathrooms, paid laundry machines, kitchen area (electric stovetop, kettle, microwave, toaster, fridge and locker space, generous amount of cooking utensils), eating area, lounge area with TV/ board games/ gaming consoles, computer area and large outdoor balcony. Free wifi is available in the common areas, however you can access premium wifi from your rooms at an extra cost. To the delight of many hostelers, YHA offers daily specials to their residents on certain days which include cheap pub meals, twice weekly pub crawls, BBQ cook ups and movie nights.

Brandon and I were pleasantly delighted by YHA Surfers. Our bedroom was quite cosy and warm despite the chilling 5 degrees outside, and only around the corner from the common bathroom and kitchen facilities. The free wifi in common areas will be sufficient for most of your day-to-day browsing, although I probably wouldn’t be streaming movies with it. A huge highlight was the opportunity to cook all our meals on site courtesy of the expansive kitchen facilities, allowing us to save some cash (an attractive thing for many travellers) and have some healthy homecooked food. Quick shout out to Miller’s Gourmet Butcher (Pacific Fair shopping centre) supplying their 10/10 mint honey lamb chops & honey soy chicken wings … definitely recommend hitting them up if you’re a meat lover!

YHA hostels is an absolute winner for students seeking a comfortable stay, wide abundance of facilities, great location within close proximity to multiple attractions/ facilities and all for a cheap, affordable price! Consider applying for a YHA membership too for accessing special YHA deals Australia wide.
