AIBN Students' Association (ASA)

A small team of students work together each year to ensure that the entire cohort of PhD, masters, honours, and undergraduate students, as well as staff and prospective students, can maintain a balanced lifestyle and network in a positive atmosphere. The ASA aims to provide a community and support network for everyone at AIBN. We achieve this by providing a range of events to encourage networking, collaborations, diversity, social engagement and wellbeing, and development as a research student. Join us today!
The ASA society was formed at the end of 2006 with AIBN students and early career researchers in mind. Group leaders, AIBN staff and anyone else who wants to take part in the club’s activities are encouraged to come along and participate in all our events!

The ASA works to:

  1. Promote co-operation between the students and groups within AIBN and generate an awareness of the skills and expertise that exists within AIBN.

  2. Provide a support network for AIBN undergraduate and postgraduate research students, as well as all young researchers (especially for the institutes >66% international students).

  3. Hold social events such as movie nights, trivia nights and social sporting competitions. The ASA works with students’ associations from other research institutes and schools throughout UQ to hold inter-institute events.

  4. Provide opportunities to develop research related skills, specifically focusing on science communication and other soft skills.

Events you can look forward to with the ASA:

Social: Monthly Social Mixers, Inter-institute Trivia, ASAmazing Race, Australia Day Mixer, Movie nights, Paint and Sip, Easter Egg hunt, St Patrick’s Day pub crawl and cultural celebrations (including Cinco de Mayo, Holi Festival, Chinese New Year)

Research development: Career Development Week, Student Symposium

Health and Well-being: OHS Quarterly Morning teas, Student Focus groups, AIBN Animal Visits, RU OK Day hot brekky

Sport: Fortnightly social sport (volleyball, badminton, tennis, squash), Running club, Fencing ‘come and try’ session, Inter-Institute Football, Inter-institute Great Court Race

UQU acknowledges the Turrbal and Yugara as the First Nations owners of the lands where UQU now stands. We pay respect to the Elders past and present, and to emerging leaders, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, research and learning. UQU acknowledges the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people play within the community.
