We conduct a variety of social, professional development, sporting, and volunteering events throughout the year. These events are aimed to provide students with guidance, skills, knowledge, and career experience that will help them in future employment. GEMS seeks to create an enjoyable and educational experience at university, while creating life-long friends and fun memories.
Social Events:
GEMS hosts a variety of social events that are well known around campus. Throughout the year, expect a launch party, pub crawls, trivia nights, documentary nights, first-year mixers, and of course, our famous SECS Ball!
Professional Development:
At GEMS, we aim to provide you with guidance, skills, and experience that will aid you in your desired career pathway. We achieve this through events like our employability night, industry night, professional sponsorships, and degree information sessions.
Sporting Teams:
We participate in mixed-team social sports such as Touch Football, Soccer, and other sports throughout each semester, which are hosted by UQ Sport and UQ Interfaculty Competitions (UQIC). Social sporting teams are one of the best ways to get well involved with the GEMS community while keeping fit at the same time. Other sporting events may be made available throughout the semester.
Volunteering Opportunities:
Volunteering has a special role in GEMS: it allows members to get hands-on experience, skills, and network, while helping the environment. We work alongside local Brisbane catchment groups, allowing us to give back to the community through landscape restoration and tree planting.
Yearly Membership:
Membership is necessary for access to our members-only events, as well as discounted rates on open events. Membership can be purchased via the ‘Sign Up’ button on our Facebook page, via our QPay link, as well as in person on Market Days at beginning of semester. This membership lasts the entire year.
