Refugee Tutoring Club (UQRTC)

UQ’s Refugee Tutoring Club is a not-for-profit society run by UQ student volunteers. The society aims to support young refugee people in the Brisbane area through tutoring high school and TAFE subjects.

UQRTC Tutors are signed up to volunteer at one of our tutoring sessions held Monday & Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on-campus at UQ St Lucia Campus.

Sessions are a collaborative and rich learning environment, with mentoring bonds forming between participants. They are supervised by experienced Tutoring Coordinators, who provide support for tutors and students.

Tutors undergo a skills induction and cultural awareness training to get them started. All tutors are also required to have a Blue Card.

In addition to tutoring sessions, UQRTC fundraises for and collaborates with refugee-based organisations in the Brisbane community. We do this through a variety of social fundraising events. Our main event is Refugee Awareness Week in Semester 2, which includes postcard writing, cultural movie night, a panel discussion, political letter writing and trivia. These are extended to the UQ community. We also engage in soccer matches with students and social picnics.

UQRTC began in 2013, through the initiative and will of a UQ student to make a positive difference to the live of refugee students in their community. Since becoming UQU-affiliated in 2015, UQRTC has grown significantly within the UQ community, and was most recently awarded Club of the Year (Social/Political) and Charitable Contribution of the Year at the 2019 Clubbies.

We welcome all new interested members, as we continue to support refugees in our Brisbane community.

Not at all! While prior experience can come in handy, we welcome all UQ students interested in tutoring subjects they are proficient in, and provide induction workshops to all new tutors.

Yes – UQRTC also collaborates with other refugee-based groups in the Brisbane area for fundraising and community-building. We welcome students who do not wish to tutor to still take part in our social fundraising and awareness-raising events.

All tutors must have Blue Cards to tutor with us. UQRTC will submit applications of eligible students to receive their Blue Card with us if they do not have one already.
