Supporting Women in Medicine (SWIM)

For equality in medical school, as doctors and for our patients.

Established in 1995, SWIM is a UQ medical student organisation that celebrates the achievements and role of those who identify as women, in medicine, while recognising the unique challenges they face.

Our aim is to inspire, empower and connect.

To do this, we provide academic support and many social events for UQ medicine students throughout the year.
Our “Women in…” networking nights provide students the unparalleled opportunity to talk, network with and hear the journeys of female-identifying leaders in medicine, alternative medical pathways, surgery and rural medicine. We also hold highly interactive Professional Development Workshops targeted to prepare medical students for some of the challenges they may face in the workforce, including resilience, conflict resolution and more.

On the academic front, we run clinical exam workshops that give our first years additional tips, tricks and practice time for their clinical coaching assessments.

Additionally, SWIM loves giving back to the community. We hold Charity Wine and Cheese Nights, Cocktail Parties, cook meals at Ronald McDonald Houses and hold Period Drives – all to support worthy causes. We also aim to encourage holistic lifestyles for students, by supporting fitness activities as well as organising group fitness events.

SWIM believes that everyone has a role in supporting women in medicine – we welcome students of all genders and work closely with other organisations such as the University of Queensland Medical Society and the Queensland Medical Women’s Society.

If you are interested in getting involved with SWIM or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected].
