UQ English and Literature Society (UQEELS)

Welcome! UQ’s English and Literature Society is passionate about all things literature and how books provide a unique way to see the world. This is a space for you to share your favourite books, writers and authors with other fellow students!

Established in 2020, the UQ English and Literature Society (UQEELS) is located on the St Lucia campus. Our society was founded by a group of students who noticed there wasn’t a society for English or Literature majors, and formed a society with the support of teaching staff and a Student-Staff Partnerships project. Our society aims to create a safe and fun space for students to meet others with similar interests in reading and literature.
Casual events include book swaps, meet-ups (with food, of course!), group outings to literature events within Brisbane, book clubs and read-alongs, and movie nights. If you have any ideas for casual meetings and social events, feel free to let us know. Chances are if you are interested in something, other members are too!
We also offer more academic events such as panel discussions, essay writing competitions, skill-building workshops and peer mentoring. In these events, we include a mix of UQ students, staff, and those working in the field to provide a range of perspectives to our members.
We hope to see you at our events soon, and shoot us an email if you have any questions!

Not at all! Anyone is welcome to join to share their passion for books and reading. Some of our events are dedicated to building skills for English and Literature courses and assessment, but we also run meet-ups for casual discussion, book swaps, and much more!
