UQ Sri Lankan Association

Established in 2014, the University of Queensland Sri Lankan Association (UQSLA) seeks to actively facilitate cultural diversity and appreciation of Sri Lanka. To be a place where students are able to come together and celebrate Sri Lankan culture.

As a smaller cultural society, UQSLA is proud to be a growing club with more members each year, hosting exciting and fun networking and social events celebrating the beautiful culture. Members of UQSLA are primarily undergraduate students studying a variety of different degrees which enables diversity within the club. It remains the mission of the association to be the connection between students of the university and their Sri Lankan heritage by hosting valuable, social events to build relationships between our members and other students who have an appreciation for our culture.

With many of our members not being Sri Lankan, it allows for our culture to be appreciated no matter the race. From the annual Sarong Party to kick start the semester, UQSLA holds fantastic social events that brings the culture to the students. Alongside the Sarong Party, the UQSLA very successful annual Suits and Sarees Ball is the society’s flagship event and a night for students to celebrate a successful year at the biggest student-organised saree-tie balls for the club, ticking off the bucket list for all the club members “clubbing in a saree.” Through facilitating meaningful social connections at university, UQSLA lays the foundations for long-lasting friendships. UQSLA prides itself on the strong love for the Sri Lankan culture that is embraced and offered to members, the quality and diversity of our social events is a testament to UQSLA’s ability to act work diversely and creatively in the pursuit of providing our members with the means to create long lasting friendships and to thrive at university.
