UQ Taiko

The Japanese characters 太鼓 (taiko) translate directly to “big fat drum”, a form of traditional Japanese music and art that combines powerful beats with dynamic movements. Although intimately a part of Japanese culture for over 1,000 years, it has now spread all around the world and captured many people’s hearts with its lively, loud, and energetic performances. UQ Taiko holds weekly practice sessions at the University of Queensland St. Lucia campus, where we develop our taiko drumming skills and learn songs that we perform at a range of public and private events.
The UQ Japanese Taiko Drumming Team (aka UQ Taiko) is a not-for-profit, open-to-the-community taiko team based in Brisbane, Australia, established in March 2014. Our team was formed with the concept of 「みんなの太鼓。」which in Japanese means, “Taiko drumming for anyone and everyone!” Staying true to this motto, we have welcomed over 150 members from 19 different countries, including children as young as 10 years of age, in the past 18 months. The Japanese characters 太鼓 (taiko) translates directly to, “big fat drum,” and it is a form of traditional Japanese music and art that combines powerful beats with dynamic movements. Although intimately a part of Japanese culture for over 1,000 years, it has now spread all around the world and captured many people’s hearts with its lively, loud, and energetic performances. Our team endeavors to share this beautiful and powerful music, art, and culture of traditional Japanese taiko drumming with the wider community… we are spreading the ‘Taiko Love’!!!

UQU acknowledges the Turrbal and Yugara as the First Nations owners of the lands where UQU now stands. We pay respect to the Elders past and present, and to emerging leaders, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, research and learning. UQU acknowledges the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people play within the community.
