We represent the interests of UQ students and run independent services, events and outlets to enhance your student experience including Student Help On Campus (SHOC); retail, food and beverage outlets; and a fantastic campus culture. As an independent body, UQU represent students on all important university committees to ensure your voice is heard on all university matters.

UQU JobStart Program – Semester 2 2019

Who we are:
Your UQ Union (UQU) is the hub of student life at The University of Queensland. We focus on providing services, support, representation and resources that enhance your university experience outside the classroom. We are all about U!

UQU provides extensive services to around 50 000 students including free legal, education & equity, welfare, employment advice, migration support, queer rights, environmental initiatives, women’s rights and indigenous student support. Additionally, we fund and champion 190+ UQU clubs and societies and UQU Women's, International, Queer, Environment, Student Rights and Goorie Berrimpa Collectives.

The JobStart Program:
We know that getting a job with no work history can be extremely challenging. The UQU JobStart aims to provide opportunities for UQ students with a paid casual job for 3 to 6 months where the successful candidates will gain valuable skills and on-the-job experience that will assist you with securing other jobs in the future. In addition to receiving on-the-job training you will also gain skills in job seeking, resume preparation and interview techniques to make sure you’re ready when you start your job search.

Eligibility:
We do have some prerequisites, in particular to be eligible you must:

  • Be a current UQ Student
  • Have NO previous paid work history (in any country)
  • Agree to undertake on-the-job, and external training including Customer Service, Workplace Health & Safety, Barista and Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) as part of the program
  • Be available for the required hours each week
  • Agree to be involved in UQU’s social media campaign promoting the program

There are a range of jobs available in the UQU food and beverage outlets across the St Lucia campus as well as gaining invaluable experience for your future employment, being an employee of UQU during the JobStart program comes with many rewarding experiences because after all, we are the UQ for U! Available Positions:
There are a range of casual jobs available in the UQU food and beverage outlets across the St Lucia campus as part of this highly popular program. The positions available for the upcoming Semester are listed below.

  • Retail Attendant - (Lollyshop)

Hours: Approx. 10 hours per week

  • Food and Beverage Attendant – Food Runner (Darwin’s)**

Hours: Approx. 10 hours per week

  • Food and Beverage Attendant (On a Roll Bakery)

Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week

  • Food and Beverage Attendant (Main Course)

Hours: 10 hours per week

  • Kitchenhand x2 (Main Course)

Hours: Approx. 10 hours per week

  • Food and Beverage Attendant (UQU Functions)**

Hours: Approx. 10 hours per week, some weekend and out of hours’ work may be required

  • Kitchenhand (Red Room Bar)**

Hours: Approx. 10 hours per week

  • Cleaning Assistant (UQU Cleaning and Maintenance)

Hours: Approx. 10 hours per week


** To be eligible to work in the above outlets you must be eligible to attend training for your Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA).
